Speed, spatial-frequency, and temporal-frequency comparisons in luminance and colour gratings.

The perceived speed, temporal frequency, and spatial frequency of matched colour and luminance gratings were compared in separate experiments. The large factor by which colour gratings are perceived to be slower moving than matched luminance gratings cannot be explained by systematic differences in the perceived spatial frequency or in the perceived temporal frequency of the two types of grating.

Analysis of stacked rotated gratings.

We study the rigorous design and analysis of stacked rotated gratings (SRGs) for novel photonic devices. A concept of sampling frequency is proposed to systematically design SRGs. With the help of a rectangular sampling lattice, we extend the standard 3D rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) algorithm to the analysis of SRGs. The resultant SRG-RCWA algorithm can be used to exactly analyze SRGs ...

Discriminability of suprathreshold compound spatial frequency gratings.

We have investigated the detectability of small contrast changes in compound suprathreshold gratings, containing two sinusoidal components. We examined the relationship between the detectability of changes in each of the components alone and the detectability of changes in the two components together. It was found that for the pairs of spatial frequencies 1 and 9 c/deg there is a square law sum...

Discrimination of compound gratings: Spatial-frequency channels or local features?

Models based on spatial-frequency channels and local features provide alternative explanations for suprathreshold pattern discrimination. We compared psychophysical discrimination data with the predictions of the Wilson and Gelb channel model and three local-feature models. The features were peak-valley local contrast, peak-peak local contrast, and luminance gradients. We measured visual sensit...

Contrast discrimination with sinusoidal gratings of different spatial frequency.

The detectability of contrast increments was measured as a function of the contrast of a masking or "pedestal" grating at a number of different spatial frequencies ranging from 2 to 16 cycles per degree of visual angle. The pedestal grating always had the same orientation, spatial frequency, and phase as the signal. The shape of the contrast-increment threshold versus pedestal contrast (TvC) fu...
